The Australian Patents No 2011100160 and 2011101375

A SYSTEM FOR BOOKING A TIME PERIOD FOR UTILISING A TIME BASED SERVICE OR RESOURCE  - The following has been extracted from Patent 2011101375

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to a system for booking a time period for utilising a time based service or resource provided by a resource/service provider.

The invention also relates to a method for booking a time period for utilisation of a time based resource or service over a communication network.

The invention also extends to a computer software code for integrating a provider of an online hosted booking system and a software program implementing the software code for booking a time based service or resource.

The innovation has particular but not exclusive application to a system for booking an appointment on the world wide web with a service provider such as an accountant, a lawyer, or a medical service provider from a selection of available appointment times for that service.

The innovation also has particular application to a system for booking a time period on the world wide web for utilising a resource such as a meeting room, a sports facility, or a piece of equipment from a selection of available appointment times for that resource.

However at the same time it is to be clearly understood that the innovation is capable of broader application.

THE CLAIMS DEFINING THE INVENTION ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. A system for booking an available time period for utilising a resource or a service that is provided by a resource/service provider, the system including:

a plurality of provider arrangements, each provider arrangement corresponding to a resource/service provider and each provider arrangement indicating one or more available time periods which are available to be booked by a user;

at least one user directory or portal which indicates the available time periods for each of the resource/service providers that are available to be booked, and which facilitates booking of the available time periods on said user directory or portal;

and a synchronization and communication arrangement which facilitates direct communication between each provider arrangement and the user directory or portal over a communication network, whereby to communicate each booking of an available time period on said directory or portal to the associated provider arrangement, and to update the available time periods on the associated provider arrangement and the user directory or portal.

2. A system according to claim 1, wherein each provider arrangement comprises an online scheduling booking system, and the synchronization and communication arrangement facilitates direct communication between each provider arrangement and the user directory or portal as soon as an available time period is booked whereby to synchronise the time periods that are available to be booked for each provider on the directory or portal and on the provider arrangements of each provider.

3. A system according to any one of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein each online scheduling booking system permits each provider, for each of their available time periods to select which of the user portals will make the time period available to be booked, whereby to enable the provider to make some time periods available on some user portals but not on other user portals, and wherein each online scheduling booking system enables a service provider to change any of the time periods that have been made available for booking on the user portal/s at any time, and the synchronization and communications arrangement communicates this change in the available time periods to all the user portals on which the appointment has been placed whereby to update the user portals.

4. A system according to any one of claims 1 to 3, having a single said user directory or portal, and wherein the directory or portal obtains a service payment from each service user when they book a time period on the directory or portal.

5. A system for booking a time based appointment with a service/resource provider, including: a plurality of online scheduling booking systems, each booking system permitting a provider of time based services to allocate one or more available appointments which are available to be booked by a service user; at least one user portal which indicates one or more appointments with one or more service providers, that are available to be booked on that user portal, and service users can access each user portal and book an available appointment on that user portal; and a synchronization and communication arrangement which operatively connects each online scheduling booking system to each user portal over a communications network, whereby to communicate the booking of each appointment made on said portal by a service user to the online scheduling booking system of the provider with whom the booking has been made, to update the provider's online scheduling system by removing the booked appointment, and to communicate the booking to the other user portals so that they remove the time based appointment whereby to update the available appointments across the system.
